Housing In Edinburgh

We are three travelers, my wife and I and her mother, who are looking for reasonably priced accommodations in Edinburgh for four nights beginning on 9/27. I just read through Ricks new GB guide book which list quite a few B&Bs there, but before starting an exhaustive internet search of their web sites I thought I'd ask the experts who have helped us get this far with our trip planning. We prefer B&Bs to large hotels if possible and we would like either a large triple room or a single and double room. I'd appreciate hearing about any of your experiences with B&Bs there and your recommendations of them....and also any we should avoid. Thank you. Jim PS If you know anything about the same thing in York please add that as well.

I recently stayed at The Walton and found it very convenient. I like being in the New Town area. It's very easy to get to the Royal Mile--walk or bus. Pam

My teen age kids and I had a triple room at the Priestville house in Edinburgh last fall, and had a great experience. The innkeeper even leaves cookies for evening snacks in the room. The breakfast is very good as well, with a good variety of items. The owners, Colin and Trina, couldn't be more gracious. The location is good as well, there are bus stops within a block, though most of the time we walked to the Royal Mile (a good 20-25 minute walk).

My daughter and I stayed at Elderfields Guest House, which was just a 10 min. walk along the street until it turned into the Royal Mile. Lovely house, charming hostess, period decor to match the age of the house, and our window looked out on Arthurs Seat. Maureen the hostess makes a decent breakfast with lots of fresh fruit, and she was more than helpful with suggestions and directions for the bus, and so on. Prices were reasonable too. Bus stop was a 5 min. walk away and the house sits in a quiet, residential street. http://guest-houses-edinburgh.com/

Jim, I stayed at Hotel Ceilidh Donia when I was in Edinburgh last year, and would highly recommend it! It's a B&B-style Hotel, the room was very comfortable and the owners were wonderful. It's located about 10-15 minutes from Waverley Station (by Bus or Taxi) in a nice residential area. I found that especially during the Festival, Fringe and Edinburgh Military Tattoo, "reasonably priced" accommodations are difficult to find near the Royal Mile, but Hotels a bit out of the city centre are more reasonably priced. I'm not sure if that's also true at the time you'll be there? Happy travels!

Thank you one and all. After checking out what you have recommended both here and privately, and those in Rick's guide book, I have narrowed it down to two B&Bs who have availability. Surprisingly, many are already booked. The two are The Glenalmond Guest House and the Kingsway Guest House. According to the maps I saw they are in the Dalkeith Road area and about 1/4 mile from each other. Does anyone out there have any experience with either of these. They both look good on Trip Advisor, but I'd rather rely on the experts here. Much better track record.

Here's another option just to confuse you - Kenvie Guest House by Dorothy Vidler. It's in Dalkeith B&B area. Not fancy - clean, good breakfasts. We had a triple room with our own ensuite bathroom. Easy bus connections to City Center. Many B&B's are in this area. A few flights of steps.
