I need to stay near Gatwick airport for a night to catch an early flight. Does anyone know of good hotels near there? A bed and breakfast would be even better! My search so far has turned up a lot of chain hotels with bedbug complaints. Thanks!
When I need a place near Gatwick I stay here: http://www.springwoodguesthouse.co.uk/ Free pick-up and drop-off, comfy rooms, walking distance to the Old Six Bells pub for dinner. Breakfast is continental not English, but there are places at Gatwick if you want the full spread. There are plenty of other B&Bs in Horley - you might do better searching on that instead of Gatwick.
Years ago we found the nearby Gable End B&B Free transport to the airport and also a short walk from Ye Olde Six Bells pub which I agree is good for dinner. Link to a recent thread on this subject http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm?topic=63013
Dunno where you're thinking of staying but my wife and I regularly stay at and around Gatwick for several different reasons even though we don't fly, and we have never seen any bedbugs as long as we have lived. In the Gatwick area we have always stayed at chain hotels. We have been happy with a Comfort, two Holiday Inns, a Holiday Inn Express, an Ibis, a Sofitel (most convenient and our favourite biut you pay for a Sofitel and especially a convenient one), a Post House, probably others I can't remember.
The Travelodge is "cheap and cheerful" and could not be much closer, but the Ibis, although not so cheap, does have a free shuttle to the airport. If you are using a rental car, bear in mind that most hotels around there charge for parking - yes, even if you are staying there! Roger
"most hotels around there charge for parking" - instead of charging for parking, the B&B I use lets you leave your car there while you're traveling for free.
The Corner House Hotel in Horley is 5 minutes from the airport. They provide free transporation to the airport.
Check out the YOTEL right in Gatwick airport. The price is depending on how many hours you stay. It's probably not the most spacious place you'll ever stay, but I've always wanted to stay at one of these places just for the fun of it. We book it in June for 61GBP. http://www.yotel.com/en/Hotels/London%20Gatwick.aspx
I agree that it would be fun to check out the Yotel, but for an overnight a B&B will be cheaper and almost certainly more spacious.
Arora International - Gatwick, http://www.arorainternational.com/gatwick/Arora_Gatwick.html I stayed one night in summer '09. The cost was £55 including VAT. The hotel is about 8 minutes by rail south of the airport. The hotel has direct access from the train station on platform 2. If you are coming from Gatwick airport's direction, it'll the the platform you're on when exiting the train. Look to the north end of the platform (ie, don't cross over the bridge to the station) for a gate with an intercom button to be let in to the Arora.
""most hotels around there charge for parking" - instead of charging for parking, the B&B I use lets you leave your car there while you're traveling for free." There are plenty of B&Bs around there that offer that facility, but Marilyn said she would be catching a flight the next morning, so that is not really relevant. If you want a hotel near the airport for an early flight and you have a rental car to return, the best bet is to return your car to the rental company before checking in and stay at a hotel that has an airport shuttle.
