Hotels in Spitalfields Neighborhood?

Hello- I will be visiting London in early February. Was looking into staying at the Hotel Novotel London- St. Pancras. I chose this location because my daughter will be attending school in the Kings Cross area. Another hotel I was looking into was the Premium Inn. I have checked Tripadvisor, I just wanted to get input from this site. Thank you-

Maria, When you say Premium Inn, do you mean Premier Inn? I don't know of the former but do the latter. If so, which branch?

Hello Nigel- After all the research I did on Kings Cross Neighborhood I found out last night that dorms will be in Spitalfields. Is this considered the South Bank? Now I have to find hotels nearby. I know the closest tube is Liverpool St. How is this area?
Thank you-

Hi Maria No, Spitalfields is nowhere near the south bank. It is the old meat market area, still has some meat action, very near the hospital, at the very border of the City of London. Commercial Street runs through it on the way from Kings Cross to Blackfriars. It can be ok, or a little rough around the edges.

One of the TA London Forum Destination Experts "TravellerPlus" is very knowledgeable about that area of London. Why not post a question there, she is a goldmine and very obliging?

Margaret Thanks for posting that link. I see that you have visited Spitalfields. Don't you think it was just a little looking through rose coloured glasses?

I thought Spitalfields Market was interesting. I have been to London many times over the years, but didn't go to Spitalfields until a couple of years ago. Even when I stayed at the Barbican on one trip I didn't make it to Spitalfields even though it is relatively close to the hotel. I was introduced to the area on one of the London Walks. I think I know what you mean about it being like looking through rose-coloured glasses. It's definitely somewhat gentrified, which is probably not to everyone's taste. I assume the original market prior to redevelopment was much less so.

If you want to be centered around King's Cross, check out Bloombury. It is a more touristy area than right around King's Cross. If your daughter is at University College London, you are right there. The Radisson Edwardian is more like a hotel in the US (I haven't stayed there, but heard from a good source it is okay.) I have stayed at a B&B called the Thanet on Bedford Place. It is okay. There are places of varying standards. And when you are in Bloombury, there is a lot to see right there, and you can take the bus down to the Strand, or to Tube to other parts of central London pretty easy. You can also get up to Camden and North London. Good luck!
