hotel Oslo

Reading Rick Steves, Trip Advisor and Lonely Planet, I am uncertain about selecting a hotel in Oslo. Reviews are varied on The Thon chain. Don't need fancy, but want clean, comfortable. Anyone been recently? Any "secrets"? Also, Bergen....

Almost all hotels here will be clean and comfortable...and not cheap. The Thon chain is fine and has a nice basic level of service. I don't know of any secrets, but then again, I never stay at hotels in Oslo. :)

We picked the Thon chain for a hotel to stay in in Scandinavia after reading a flyer that said if we joined their "club" we could get all kinds of benefits including a discount at all of their hotels. We joined. We liked their hotels and would stay in them whenever we return to Scandinavia.

Hi Becky- I was pleased with reviews on TripAdvisor for Comfort Hotel Xpress in Oslo. I must have read hundreds of reviews, and it got consistently high marks for location and safety (and still in the budget price range, at least for Oslo) and so it was the one I chose. I haven't been there, though. Cindy

We have reservations at Cochs Pensjonat, which we found on Rick Steves, and Lonely Planet. Have requested the "best twin", quiet room, 5th floor, with park view, for 860KR/$170. Have you heard anything positive, or negative about this place?

Becky, you posted in May so probably have decided already. But we stayed at Thon in September, 2009, and would not hesitate to go back. It was neat and clean and quite nice. We were pleased and impressed. Breakfast was good also, and we shared it with a very nice lady from Paris.

Becky, We just returned from Oslo and Aurland last week. We stayed at the Scandic Byporten directly above the main train depot. Trip advisor had good reviews. Yes everything in Oslo is expensive. We paid about $300 US per night. It was clean and small but convenient to metro .(the $300 didnt include the $20 per night extra if you wanted to actually watch the TV). Good luck.
