Any suggestions on a good hotel or b&b, moderately priced, in manchester easily accessible to city center? Thanks.

You need to find somewhere near a METRO station. I've used the Hotel Mansfield in Sale - cheap and cheerful, near the Sale Metro station and some nice pubs and restaurants.
