Hotel near the V & A or British Museum

I'll be arriving in London a day and half before meeting up with an RS tour in Bath. My main goal for those days are to see the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert if jet lag allows. I'd like to find a hotel room for one night within walking distance of one or the other. Safe and reasonable (I'll be alone). Any suggestions?

Hi Susan,
I often stay at the Millenium Baileys. It is very conveniently located across the street from the Gloucester Road tube station. This is about a 10-15 minute walk from the V&A. They often have decent rates (70 GBP or less) on single rooms if you book in advance. However, their rates fluctuate widely, so depending on when you are going this might not be a good deal. It is very easy to get to from Heathrow by tube as Gloucester Road tube station is on the Piccadilly line. Hotel will hold your bag if you arrive early and they don't have a room available or if you are departing late in the evening.

The website lastminute.com (choose the UK site rather than the US site) has an option where you can choose a London landmark such as the V&A or the British museum and see hotels in order of distance from the museum.

Hotel Rembrandt is just across the street from V&A. Not sure what you consider reasonable but we got a good price on this hotel through British Air--not necessary to be flying on BA--look at their website. Rembrandt is a great location and they include a buffet breakfast in the room rate.

Why limit yourself to these areas since you can easily get to Holborn or South Kensington on the Tube. You also must let us know what is 'reasonable' to you - is this 50 pounds or 150 pounds/night?

The 2 hotels close to Holborn Station (for the British Museum) that I am familar with is the Renaissance Chancery Court (part of the Marriott chain) - this is a phenomenal hotel but is going to be very pricey. Right across from it is the Citadens Apartment Hotel that will have cheaper rates. I'm sure there are lots of other hotels close to the park next to the British Museum but I can't recall the names. You will need to get a guide book and hunt these out if the location is that important to you.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be coming from Gatwick and most probably taking the Gatwick express into London after my arrival at 7am. I just wanted to stay close to one of the museums so i could drop off my bag at the hotel and hit the museum before my room is ready. i just wanted to walk to the museum the first day. The following day i'll take the tube or bus to the other museum and then head out to Bath mid afternoon.

Reasonable to me is less than $100. I want to be able to sleep and feel safe. I don't need lots of extras just a bed, private bath and wifi access in my room would be great.

Why not try the easyHotel in Earl's Court? It got a good review from a poster here (can't remember her name) and rooms are very cheap and basic. Within walking distance to the V&A and easy tube to the British Museum (or an easy bus trip too, more scenic).

Actually Tami, the lowest rates normally are around 35 pounds a night, I've never seen it as low as 25. And I wouldn't want a room without a window (feeling like a prison cell) so I'd pay the extra fare for the room with the window.

Did you know that the early easyCruise ships had many staterooms without a window? Even though the rooms were on the outside of the ship, they had no window! That was changed later on!!

We stayed at the Corus Hotel Hyde Park which is just across the park (Kensington Gardens) from the V&A. Not too expensive for a mid-range hotel and good reviews from TripAdvisor travellers. I plan to add another positive review.

Also, it is a couple of blocks from Paddington Station and the trains both to Bath and to Heathrow. A short walk to the West and you are in Bayswater & Notting Hill. A short walk to the East (through parks) and you are getting to the heart of London.

Getting a hotel in London for 100 dollars is not going to be easy. But the B&Bs Rick suggests in the Victoria Station area (Belgravia neighborhood) may work for you. The V&A is within walking distance N and W of Victoria Station. We stayed at the Lynton Hotel B&B. Great breakfast. Very simple room. Tiny bathroom. Lots of stairs. Great hosts. We enjoyed the pub grub and ale at St. George's Tavern just East of the Victoria Station shops on Belgrave Road. Rick's guidance turned out well for us as is so often the case.

Hyde Park Rooms Hotel in Paddington also has very reasonable rooms for less than $100 a night and they include breakfast. They have very good reviews on Tripadvisor.com.

That was Me, Dave!
RE Earls Ct Easyhotel. Its about a 10 minute walk up W.Cromwell road to the V&A, Natural History musem and historical Bromptom Oratory. Also another 10 minutes and youre in Knightsbridge, i.e. Harrods and other shops.
www.easyhotel.com. Great reviews on tripadvisor.com.
25 pounds per night (Approx $40) with VAT included, small and very clean if all you need is a bed and bathroom/shower en suite. If you need lots of room and fancy accomodations, then it wont work for you. I will be staying there again in 2 weeks when i go back for another week.

Holborn is not too far away on the tube, as the Earls Ct tube station is less than 10 minutes walk up Earls Ct road.

Its a good location and the poster was asking for stuff in this area.
When I booked a month ago, I paid just under 25 pounds per night for my 6 night stay at the end of this month.
Per night:
Total Price GBP 21.28 VAT 3.19 15.00 % TOTAL GBP 24.47

VAT dropped from 17.50 % to 15.00 % last December.

I checked and for March its 30 pounds per night now.
Yes, the ones with the window may be more. I dont like sun much so no window was fine with me.
The whole point of it is that its a good location and if youre sleeping, why do you need a window? It will be dark out.... lol
