Hotel in Manchester, England

I am going to be in Manchester, England for an academic conference during the first weekend in December. Can anyone recommend a good hotel that won't break the bank near the University of Manchester? Thanks, Peter

The ACCOR chain has several within walking distance of the campus, however, the cheapest is pretty spartan!
