hotel in London for semi-spoiled travelers

We are going to London for the 4th time in late september, want to try a new hotel. I have pored through all the websites, esp those that include feedback from the travelers themselves.Frustrating, because one guest will offer rave reviews, another describes it as a "dump". Also, even on the hotel websites, it is really hard to tell whether a "double" means a US double, a queen, or a King bed.Often they do not distinguish, and of course, the photo of a room on the site is usually a premium room example, not the standard room.
We do not want to spend more than $200/night, nor do we want to be further out than Earl's Court. We want clean, king or 2 twins, en suite of course, nonsmoking, and not a feeling that it hasn't been refurbished/maintained for years and years.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've always fancied the Russell Hotel on Russell Square but could never afford to stay there. Have a look at their website and even the rates look good this year.

Is this US200 or GBP200? You will be very lucky to find a room for less than US200 as a "semi-spoiled traveller".

Are you a senior citizen? If so, I would recommend the Milestone Hotel, which offers Superior Rooms to Senior Citizens at a rate of GBP200.

They offer a high quality of service and great amenities.

The OP has specified $200, not GBP 200. I stayed at the Milestone on my very first trip to the UK, lo, these many years ago, and I loved it. But nowadays, at GBP 200? No, too rich for my blood.

When the English say King sie, they mean the US Queen size. So check this carefully.

My Mother and I once stayed at the Millennium Gloucester which is at Gloucester Road tube station and very convenient. We got a very good rate for a twin room in August, air conditoned, nicely decorated and with a good bath and separate WC. It is a large hotel with not much in the way of ambiance, but it was very clean and the rate was great for a week in August. I suspect that many of the clientale are businesmen. There is a Starbucks across the road and a Waitrose supermarket at the tube station. The room rate did not include breakfast but there was a kettle in the room It is in a good residenial neighborhood.

I think youhave to google them under Millennium Hotels. Another friend recently stayed her with her daughter and loved it.

We like the Victoria Thistle (also called the Grosovenor). It is right inside Victoria Station. Very nice, good service and the rooms are a good size (esp. if you get one level upgrade- their Jr. suite is very good).

Have you considered bidding on Priceline? With the economy being what it is, there are a lot of good deals. We're staying at the Marriott Grosvenor House on Park Lane in October for $135/night plus tax.

We have stayed several times at the Rembrandt which has been fully renovated and is very comfortable with great breakfast. It is down the street from Harrod's and across the street from V&A Museum. I would certainly consider this location to be much nicer than Earl's Court. You can usually get a disount at this hotel through British Air even if you are not flying with them. Another option is Regency near or on Queen's Gate.

Thanks to all for the feedback...FYI, I had already looked at the Rembrandt through sev different sources to compare offers....the cheapest I could get was about $250 USD for midlevel double room. Ouch.Friends had told us they had stayed there and they really liked it. The Milestone must have done a lot of refurbishing, because their rates were REALLY high, over 200GBP per night! I wound up booking the Quality Crown Hotel in Kensington on an advance purchase rate....3 nights/exec king room/inclusive of breakfast,VAT etc for about 370 GBP. For London, I think that's pretty good. So now on to the web to look for hotels for York!!

The Royal York is an excellent hotel. It is attached to the York railroad station. Just a short walk to the center of town. It also has a beatiful flower garden.

We have stayed at the Quality Crown hotel in Kensington about 3 times - this August will be our 4th. One time our room was pretty small but other than that I've been pleased with the size of the room - it's been clean - people friendly - an elevator - good breakfast buffet - wonderful location - easy walk up to Kensington High Street with lots of shops/restaurants. Have fun!

We stayed at the Lime Tree Hotel near Victoria station and loved it. Price was 135.00 per night.

I hear you, Rhonda. Most budget and even 3 star hotels in London are dumps. It's very frustrating. I've never been able to afford anything but a dump in London but have found acceptable "dumps" which have the amenities you require and are in good locations. I'm more interested in neighborhood and access to the tube and the beds, of course. A double is always a very tiny bed. There is no such thing as a queen or king bed in England unless you are staying at 5 star hotel and even then, make sure it's one of the big US chains like a Marriott, not an English hotel. My husband is very tall and can barely fit by himself in a double bed sleeping corner to corner. We usually have to settle for twin beds but his feet hang way over and sometimes get in the way of the door because the rooms are always so tiny. I like the Lonsdale Hotel in Bloomsbury. It's still less than $200.00 and very close to a nice tube stop, Holborn, and walking distance to Covent Garden & Leichester Square and Chinatown. The Gresham Hotel is also nice and in the same area but closer to the Tottenham Court station, which I despise. These are about the best you can do in such a nice part of town. There are also loads of pubs & good restaurants nearby. They are still dumps by our US standards and way overpriced but usually clean & include the English breakfast and are adequate within your price range. They offer private bathrooms too, which is important. I'd be happy to check out some of the rates for you if you like. I've stayed in about 14 different hotels in London and know it pretty well.

Thank you Katherine, but I posted a few days ago that I booked the Quality Crown Hotel in Kensington. (See above post of mine)
I did try the websites of both of your suggestions, there were no pics of accomodations on either one. I am way too big of a coward to blindly book a place with no idea whatsoever what to expect!! But again, thanks.
