Hi Merle, If you could define "nice" in terms of price and location, then others should have an easier time giving recommendations. Until then, I can only go by my thought of "nice" :-) .. I've stayed twice and found this guest house in the New Town area to be fine for my needs: http://www.deneguesthouse.com/ Cheers.

We have enjoyed staying at the Royal British Hotel. It is across Princes St. from Waverly Train Station. They serve a great breakfast and it is an excellent location to walk to the Royal Mile.

You might want to look at The Scotsman near the Royal
Mile and The George in New Town. I've had friends stay at both and enjoy them. Pam

I enjoyed staying at the Radisson Blue (SAS) Hotel on the Royal Mile. We stayed in a family room and found it to be very comfortable with a great location. I have a few pilot friends who often are put up by their airline there too, no complaints from any of them so far. http://www.radissonblu.co.uk/hotel-edinburgh

merle, When will you be in Edinburgh? I'm also spending some time there on my trip this year, and found that the Hotel prices seem to increase during the Edinburgh Festival and other events during the summer. I doubt that you'll find anything along the Royal Mile for $200 at that time of year. Good luck and happy travels!

Stayed in the George last fall. Good hotel. It's in New Town in a convenient location. My room was in a new/renovated section. I'd ask for that if I go back. Only issue: the hot water wasn't hot enough.

How long are you staying? If about a week, an apt. becomes viable. We stayed here: http://www.numberfive.com/ It is in Portobello, which is a bit farther out than New Town, but the bus stops at the front door and you can ride into Edinburgh in 20 minutes. You can also cook some food there and save some money.
