Hotel in Dover

In mid-September we'll be taking the P+O ferry from Dover over to Calais. Would like to stay in Dover the night before so as to be able to get on an "early" ferry. Would like names of any conveinent hotels in Dover. Thanks!!

Oh dear. I hope somebody chimes in with a good'en. Part of the reason that started us driving under the Channel using Eurotunnel was the absolutely appalling state of Dover B&Bs. Never, in all my puff, had I seen such poor excuses for places to stay (ok- Scarborough). This was a few years ago - once we discovered Eurotunnel we haven't used a single ferry since - so my horrible times should be taken with a grain (lump) of salt. Dover does have a very informative and most excellent castle, including WWII tunnels.

I stayed at St. Martin's Guest House about 15 years ago (good golly, time flies!)and liked it. The owner was friendly and helpful. My room, on the top floor, was a bit cramped because of the sloped ceiling, and it had a tiny bathroom, but was otherwise quite comfortable and had a nice view. I just checked to see if it was even still around; it is, and gets pretty respectable reviews on Trip Advisor. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186313-d1546049-Reviews-St_Martin_s_Guest_House-Dover_Kent_England.html

We had a good night's stay at the Best Western Churchill Hotel in Dover a couple of years ago. Right on the beach, a short walk to downtown (such as it is) and the Castle. You'll need a taxi (not expensive) to the ferry if you're not driving.
