Hotel in central London

Could someone recommend a hotel in central London - Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, London Eye - that is around $150.00/200.00 per night?

We really like the location of Sanctuary House Hotel on Tothill St., about a block from Westminster Abbey and close to Westminster Bridge. It is an easy walk through St James Park to Trafalgar Square. Their weekend rate is 112 pounds a night if you book all three nights. Or take the two night special that includes Monday or Thursday for 125. I want to go back to London!!!

I will look up Sanctuary House. What did you think of the hotel itself?

We like it. It was almost brand new the first time we stayed there, in 2003. Since then, we have returned twice. The rooms are fairly large by London standards and have a large modern bathroom. Decor is more traditional than modern, but not ornate. Our rooms were always warm reds and corasl, but it appears from the webstie that they have re-done the colors to something more neutral. The rooms are above the pub (the hotel is part of the Fullers pub chain) but the noise, if any, never seems to reach the rooms. As for traffic, there is very little, as the hotel is on a quiet street in the financial district, which is very quiet in the evenings anyway, and especially on weekends. The elevator seems a little small and quirky so we always use the stairs. Breakfast-I don't know if it still the same, but we had continental breakfast included with our room rate. We did not choose to pay extra for the "full English breakfast" which is too hearty for us. The offerings included the same cold cereal we eat at home, plus breads, rolls, fruit, coffee and tea. It is a nice short walk one block down a secret little lane to St. James park and the Birdcage Walk. The one downside I can think of is that there are no shops or restaurants in the immediate vicinity (apart from the pub, which we have neever tried for lunch or dinner.) We don't mind, as we love to walk through the park to Trafalgar Square and on to Leister Square or Covent Garden areas, and back along the Strand, or cross Westminster Bridge and walk along the Thames (south side) to the Millenium Bridge and cross back to the Blackfriers area. Wish I were there right now, even if it is bitter cold.

My husband, 2 adult children, and I were in London in October 2009. It was our first visit to the UK. We loved it! We stayed in Bayswater area that time, but it was not convenient to any attractions. This time will just be husband and I celebrating our 30th anniversary. We love to walk, also, so as long as weather permits we will walk to most attractions. We want to tour the Tower this time, so probably will take the tube there. Thanks, Lola

You could take the boat from Westminster Pier---I think it stops at tower Millenium Pier. It's fun, with the narration and all. On the other hand, there is some benefit to getting to the Tower right when it opens, to beat the crowds.

My favorite hotel for location is the Strand Palace. It is about a block behind Covent Garden and is walking distance to numerous sights: Trafalgar Square, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly, River Thames, Buckingham Palace, and others. In fact, when I stay there I rarely even use the tube, but there are several tube stations close by as well. Prices are at the upper end of your budget, but you can sometimes find cheaper rates on wotif.com. Strand Palace: http://www.strandpalacehotel.co.uk/
