Try "London Home to Home", or "At Home in London" [google for URLs] - they each have houses all over London and nearby suburbs with a variety of room sizes and types for modest prices. Two of us stayed with Bridget in Chiswick in April 2007, full breakfast and shared bath, for 55 GBP/night. You can stay closer in for a bit more money; the websites give lots of options.
