home base in western Ireland

We're looking for a suitable home base to rent a self-catering out west. We've got 2 families traveling together with a total of 11 people, so finding B&B's each night isn't an option, so we want to settle somewhere and do day trips from there. We definitely want to see the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, and the Burren, and possibly down to Dingle and up to Galway and the Aran Islands. Is there someplace central to all of that that would be a good place to stay?

We'll have kids in the group with ages ranging from 17 to 3.

Maureen I think a self catering cottage would be a good bet for two families.
Check out this link. http://www.cottageguide.co.uk/ Galway would be a good home base. Enjoy your trip. Lovely country, friendly people.

I'd say check out Lahinch and surrounding areas. Absolutely beautiful location, in the Burren, the cliffs 15 minutes away, central to all the locations you've said you wanted to see.

Lahinch also has top-notch golf, a surf school (great beach) and an indoor aquatic center that may be of interest if the weathers bad and the kids need to get rid of some energy.

outstanding spot.

I'd vote for Lahinch over Galway for its location relative to the things you want to see.

Thanks, I had been looking at Lahinch. Any other kid-friendly places in the area? The pool sounds like a great idea.

It may not be central to your plans, but we rented a cottage in Ventry which was ideal. PM me if you are interested in the address.

Dingle has an aquarium that we enjoyed and there were a lot of children there. They would also enjoy seeing Fungi - the dolphin that lives in the bay at Dingle. Galway has "Liesureworld" which we did not visit but would probably be a good destination if teh weatehr was wet.
