Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)

We have tickets to go see Highclere Castle tomorrow afternoon. We are staying just off Trafalgar Square in London. Can anyone suggest the best route to get there? We don't have a car and will probably want to use the tube as much as possible. We know there are trains going there and have read that once you are in Newbury, you should take a taxi. Any other suggestions/thoughts?

Sorry I didn't answer in time - I've just seen your post. It was such a short time between the question and your trip. I hope you had a good time, whatever you decided.

Thanks all. We did take the tube to Paddington, then a train to Newbury (We purchased the tickets at the train station in Paddington very easily and you have the option to pick whatever available time you want going and returning.), then had a very friendly and informative taxi driver take us to Highclere. We arranged for him to come back to get us at the end of the afternoon since there don't seem to be taxis there just waiting around. Highclere was very interesting since we are big fans of Downton Abbey and it was not overly crowded so we were able to leisurely spend the afternoon there seeing the castle and grounds/gardens. Had a nice lunch there and later coffee and dessert. It is interesting that a prior owner (Lord Carnarvan) of Highclere was part of the archeological team that discovered King Tut's tomb and there are some original and other very nice reproductions of artifacts that are part of a very nice exhibition.

Nice to hear you were able to visit the Castle. Might as well stay in London.
Season 3 premieres there this month on ITV. Fans in the states must wait until January of 2013 to see it.

Hi Mike, so glad you got to see the castle. About how long (tube plus taxi) did it take to get there from London? Also, did you have to purchase Highclere tour tickets separately? Thanks...
