Helsinki in 24 hours

We booked flights to and from Europe in October with FinnAir. Coming home we will have a Saturday evening and Sunday morning in Helsinki because of connection issues. Ideas on where to stay and what to do to get a feel for the place would be most appreciated! Rob

Stay anywhere in the city center. The highlights are the harbor market, the cathedral and that immediate area, maybe the Russian church, and stroll up along the Esplanade. I also strongly suggest the train station designed by Eliel Saarinen and the Church in the Rock. All are walkable, with the Rock Church being the furthest from the harbor. That may be about all you have time for.

Thank you, Douglas. Sounds perfect. I just booked a room at the Hotel Glo Art and your suggestions sound great for a couple who love to walk. It will be Sunday morning, so there will likely be more to "see" than to "do."

Oh and definitely try and stop at the cafe in the glass structure on the Esplanade. It's a classic and a great way to grab Sunday morning coffee and pastry.

We liked the city center, harbor, market area the best. I didn't think the Rock Church was worth the trip unless you really like contemporary architecture. I think lodging in the cener area would be the most fun. There are plenty of cafes. We did take the short ferry ride out to Sumolina Island, which was worth a look around. That may be a nice trip for Sunday morning (or Saturday if you arrive early enough).
