But i thought i ask for your advice...My sister, who i talk to weekly, but haven't seen for several years, will be spending a couple of days in Helsinki on her way back to States from Moscow. She asked if i wanted to come up from Paris to join her. I was in Helsinki 100 years ago on the way to St Petersburg and all i remember is the train station and a great department store where i bought Christmas decorations and Finland glass. Anyone have a more exciting memory of the city than that to inspire me to spend my euros??
If the last time you visited Helsinki was 100 years ago, you may be surprised by the changes. Did you know they gained their independence from the Russian Empire?
Sorry, couldn't help myself there....
Helsinki is known for cool design. Some of my favorite earrings and necklaces come from the market on the waterfront in Helsinki.
okay, so it was 20 years ago...i just have the habit of saying "100" years ago to indicate that it wasn't last year..
I loved Helsinki. I was only there for one day (did the overnight cruise from Stockholm). It has beautiful and interesting architecture. The Russian influence was facinating and sets it apart from most other European capitals. Its setting on the Baltic is quite beautiful, and the surrounding archipelago is spectacular. Finally, I just love the Finnish language. I don't know it at all, but I think the names are great. If it were me, I would jump at this opportunity.
Since you haven't seen your sister in awhile, I'm sure you wouldn't regret going. My sisters are all busy doing their own thing. I would jump at the chance to travel with family.
Check out Rick's book on Scandinavia. I was there for three days on my way to St Pete's, and I wish I had spent more time there. The architecture is fascinating. There are three very interesting churches to visit, even if you are not religious. I would have travelled into the countryside if I had had the time.
Perhaps not the world's greatest city, I think you're already there (Paris), but worth some time. If you'll see family you rarely visit with, then try to make the effort.
