I will be in Edinburgh in July for a conference and am planning to stay for 5 additional days to explore (however superficially) Northern Scotland. I have been reading RS Great Britain guide book and for now what I have is – Day 1 – drive to Oban after conference, probably after lunch Day 2- drive to Inverness, passing by Glencoe Valley, Loch Ness Day 3- drive to Pitlochry Day 4 – drive to Stirling
Day 5 – drive back to Edinburgh to catch train to London Will bring hubby with me and will definitely rent a car with this itinerary. We will be spending a week in Edinburgh so I think we will be able to explore it before we go on our road trip. Is there a better way to do this trip ? Just thinking about sleeping in 4 different places each night makes me tired but I don't want to waste time driving back and forth. Should I just stay in Edinburgh and do Stirling and Pitlochry as day trips or skip those towns altogether ? It will be our first time to travel to Scotland and we are more interested in seeing the sights, small towns. And if you could include cheap but clean and safe lodging suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated (somewhere between 100-120$, if possible, but since we are going during peak season, I know that will be a challenge if not close to impossible). Thanks in advance !
I haven't been but I'm currently planning a trip which will include Scotland. I'll give you my thoughts but I'm also waiting for people that have been there to chip in. Day 1 - fine Day 2 - you'll have lots of time to stop and sightsee. You might even have time to see Culloden just east of town. Day 3 - a very short drive unless you spend hours and hours at Culloden. What about just continuing on to Stirling?
Day 4 - Stirling is just a short drive from Edinburgh. You could drive to the train station from there after spending the night there. Day 5 - Were you spending the night before the train to London? Have you considered a day trip from Oban to Iona? What about Oban, two nights on Skye, Inverness and then Stirling? This last suggestion assumes you are spending the night in Edinburgh.
