HELP? Windsor Castle or Southern Wales?

We have a car and two days when we arrive in London Saturday dinner time and then proceed to Bath on Monday lunch time. Given really one full day and an evening and morning, would it be better to just see Windsor Castle or get out and see the beautiful countryside that borders England? We have 2 days in Bath, 2 in Brighton, 1 some place yet to determined, 2 in Dover/Canterbury and then a full week in London after that. What to do/see if we do choose southern Wales given it's one real full day. Drive around or is there a special castle, ruin or loop we should travel that would give us some nice vistas and some stopping off points along the way? And can you recommend a good BnB in Wales? Thank you!!! Diane

Diane,
While I adore Windsor castle, I think getting to Wales is an experience. On a one day trip, you could easily see Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey - both gorgeous. You might even be able to swing some time at St. Fagan's Museum of Welsh Life. http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/stfagans/

Since you have a full week in London at the end, perhaps you could take a half day of that and run out to Windsor then?

Yes, we may do that. But WHERE do we stay in Wales? Any suggestions for a reasonably priced hotel/bnb?

I think Chepstow, St. Fagan's and Tintern will take up a whole day. Then you could just drive around and enjoy the countryside. Maybe head up to Abergavenny. If you had more time I'd suggest Llanthony Priory.

Thought I already responded but perhaps my post was deleted through some technical glitch. The main points were that Chepstow Castle looked very promising from the outside, thought we did not arrive in time to view the interior. Tintern Abbey likewise looked interesting from the outside, but I would not go out of my way to see it. Three weeks ago the Wye Valley was still in winter, and the trees were barren. I am sure it would be really nice with leaves on the trees. Most important, if you go to Windsor Castle check online or call ahead to see if the queen is using it. We foolishly did not, and it was closed. Worst travel mistake I have made in years..
