Help! Which Castle Ashford or Dromoland?

Can anyone help us decide? We would like to stay in a Castle one night of our trip. We will be leaving and returning to Dublin. We are considering Ashford (is it worth the price?) Also considering Dromoland. Is there one we are over looking? Any other suggestions?
Thanks for any help you can offer!!

Judy,

If your budget will stand the cost, Ashford Castle would be a good choice. While there you could tour the small town of Cong (where The Quiet Man with John Wayne was filmed back in about 1952) and the grounds and the lake are also beautiful.

Happy travels!

Ashford Castle. And I can HIGHLY recommend Corrib Cruises for a trip out on the lake to Inchagoill Island where you can see the original church built by St. Patrick when he and his nephew were banished there by the Cong Druids back in the 5th century. Peter and David Luskin, who run Corrib Cruises, are excellent tour guides. http://www.corribcruises.com/

Ashford if you can afford the price. Check out their B&B rates. Sometimes you can get a standard room for 50% off, WITH breakfast.

The Castle grounds are large, and beautiful. Not cheap to do the activities, but not outrageous.

We had a wonderful time.

I have stayed in both castles & while Ashford is certainly a bit nicer, keep in mind that Ashford is a LONG drive. If you do go there try a Falconry lesson, fantastic! Dromoland is wonderful, skeet shooting, golf, walled in rose garden, fantastic food, fun bar and a dozen cozy fireside nooks to fall into. You really will not regret either choice.

Hi Judy

Not sure I can completely make this decision for you, but we did stay at Dromoland and we thought while it has some nice aspects, we didn't think it was worth the price. Someone we know stayed as Ashford and they were very happy with it. Next time we have the opportunity, that's where we're heading!
