Just found out that the The 2011 Solheim Cup (Ladies Golf) is going to take place in Trim the same weekend we were planning on being there. All the hotels and B&Bs are booked up. Not only does that mean we need to stay somewhere else, it makes me think perhaps we should skip Trim Castle because the town will be so crowded. We are leaving the next day and changing our itinerary around is not possible. We will be driving down from Belfast and planned to see the Newgrange area, stay in Trim and see the Castle the next day. Any ideas on a nice B&B in the Newgrange area? The one I looked at seemed too much like a hostel. Any suggestions on what you might do instead of Trim Castle? This is our last day, so I was looking for something not too far from Dublin airport, although we will have an entire day. Any ideas on how crowded the town might be or alternatives would be terrific. Thanks everyone!
You won't miss much - Trim is actually not a very charming town. I have tried to like it because my ancestors are from just south of there but I prefer Skerries. It's a charming coastal town. I have stayed at the Red Bank Inn which was clean and cozy. You can visit the Mills and the Ardgillan Castle and Demense. The port and coastline are lovely. Another advantage is it's close to the Dublin airport or you can catch the train into Dublin. Have a wonderful trip. This website will provide some information - http://www.tasteofskerries.com/links.html.
Thanks JoAnn - that's a great suggestion!
Look at the Castle Cabra in Cavan.
I stayed at Roughgrange Farm, which is directly across the road from Newgrange. Lovely people, wonderful view.
We liked the castle. It might have been because we had a very good tour by one of the OPW "rangers." It would be worth the stop if you get the chance. The town of Trim isn't much. We stayed in a B&B right next to the castle. I wouldn't stay there again. The B&B was nice but the town isn't worth the overnight stop. If you are driving into the area, you should get to the Newgrange/Knowth Vistors Center as early as you can. I think they start taking reservations at 9 am for tours starting at 10 but check their website to be sure. The visitor's center is tucked away on a small road so get good directions. With any luck you should be able to see both sites (do both they are worth it) by noon. There are other sites in the area and I think it's worth a day. I would consider Newgrange/Knowth a "don't miss" site.
