Help I'm in over my head. Need London and Paris Hotels

Please help. I want to surprise my wife with a trip for our anniversary. I am having trouble with hotels and the best areas to stay in. I would like to have the air, eurostar ticket and hotels booked before I surprise her. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Michael

Can you give us a bit more information? When is the trip and for how long? What kind of things are you planning on doing? What kind of price range are you looking at for hotels?

3 nights and 4 days in each. Hotel class I was looking 3 & 4 stars. I found a few recom on this site for Paris (Hotel du Pentheon & Hotel des Grands Hommes and Hotel Castex in Maria) all looked good the first two, location may be better? London totally lost.

Michael,, I have stayed at Hotel Des Grand Hommes, and a friend of mine has stayed at Hotel Pantheon, they are owned by same company, and are side by side. They are well run, and rooms are pretty. Location is lovely, in Latin Quarter but not in a super noisey busy area. Close to Luxembourg Gardens, and more importantly , the Luxembourg RER stop so you can metro close to hotel and just walk block up to it. Rooms ARE smaller then what we North Americans are used to , but you will find that common in Europe. Rooms have nice new bathrooms, and are clean . Two other hotels I can recommend are the HOtel Le Regent( but get deluxe room, the standard rooms are scary tiny) and Hotel Brighton( if you can get a view room there your wife will be thrilled, the views are great).

If you really want to treat your wife to a special hotel in London, I recommend Duke's which is just off Piccadilly and Green Park. Near St James Palace. Very old style (pricey) English Hotel. Luxurious rooms (get a Junior Suite). Worth it for the experience, even if once in your life. Walking distance of everywhere. You and she will remember it. We did a three day there at the end of one of our trips. great in rainy cold weather. You will feel like a country gentleman visiting London.

For London: Folks on this board seem to like the London Elizabeth Hotel and the Lime Tree Hotel. The family-run Luna & Simone B&B in the Victoria area, is a safe bet. Can't recommend nice hotels in Paris for an anniversary as I've always traveled on a tight budget there.

Would like to reccommend dinner at the Jules Verne restaurant at the Eiffel tower for your anniversary. Reservations must be made now- very expensive- we spent over $600, but a memorable experience. We were celebrating our 30th there. Food and service were exceptional.

Michael: Any hotel in Central Paris will be just fine in terms of location, especially given the fact that the Metro has stations every block or two. It's really a choice among hotels based on their amenities and service...and I do like the Castex...and especially a choice among Paris neighborhoods, and the Marais is my favorite but the Luxembourg Gardens area is very very pleasant as well. London, I would recommend the Euston Road to Bloomsbury area. Three great rail stations, Euston, Kings Cross, and St Pancras, are practically lined up shoulder to shoulder there. As a result, multiple Underground lines stop there , making the area convenient...keep in mind that London, while a delightful city to walk in, is really too sprawling to walk everywhere. That's where the Tube comes in. There are multiple 4 star hotels in this neighborhood. You might consider doing a Priceline bid for a 5 star in this neighborhood...you could hardly lose whichever hotel you got with your bid.

Michael check out the Grosovenor (formerly the Victoria Thistle) Very elegant entry- decent rooms (spring for a jr. suite or a suite). Great location. Good restruants, some pubs, shopping, very close to Tube & rail- esp. good if flying into Gatwick. Some theatres nearby. If you really want to splurge try the Mountbatten in the Covent Garden/Neal's Yard area. Extremely nice and very good location. Excellent choice of restruants and pubs nearby and in heart of theatre area. Wonderful shopping in Neal's Yard and Covent Garden Market.

Buckingham Palace area: Dont know the hotel you mention- but Green park area (just North of Buckingham palace) is very convenient for walking to Piccadilly and the main parts of London. Green park tube station is on Piccadilly line which is great. probably more genteel than Victoria area

The Rue Cler and Marais neighbourhoods in Paris are popular with travelers on this board; check out a Rick Steves guidebook for hotel recommendations. A special place for a meal in London is the Oxo Tower Restaurant, run by the Harvey Nichols group, it has a view over the river Thames: http://www.harveynichols.com/output/Page128.asp.

Any suggestions for The Ruebens and The Montague on the Garden(viewed both on another post) Looking for a nice area, both seem to fit that bill. Price is right for the week we will be there. Area on both look convenient for seeing many sights. What do you folks think?? Would like to book one of them this weekend. Plane tickets, Eurostar, and Paris done. London is my last task, Thanks to all you wonderful travelers for your help. Thanks Michael

London - many are referring to The Lime Tree Hotel. Just back (was good). Superior double.Posted pictures (tagged with "The Lime Tree Hotel" on Flickr. Breakfast brilliant. Everyone from US except me (I chose it because it's a RS recommendation). Went to The Ebury Wine Bar next door for dinner - wasn't so impressed. It's very handy, but having lived in London I know there's a lot better around ...

Michael,, I stayed at Base2stay this past June,, as did a few others posters on this board, there is an actual thread on it on this past or next. Location was great, close to Earls Court or Gloucester Tube, walking distance to Victoria and Albert and Natural History Museums.

We have stayed at the Crowne Plaza (100 Cromwell Road, London). It is in the Kensington ara. We have stayed there in May, 2009 and May, 2010. It is a great hotel with a great location. We have also stayed at the Hotel Le Littre in Paris in June, 2009 and June 2010. We had a room with a balconey and a full view of the Eiffel Tower this year. We booked it directly with the hotel. The front desk staff isn't overly friendly though. The hotel is close to the train and is very centrally located in Paris. We took the train and walked everywhere. Elaine [email protected]
