Heathrow to Trafalgar Hilton

Victoria Station would require changing lines on the tube, going up and down stairs, which is always a major concern of mine, as so few of the stations are handicap accessible. We have reservations at the Trafalgar Hilton. We always take the Piccadilly line into the city. Where should we change with the least amount of stairs and what is the nearest tube station to our hotel?

Take the Picadilly Tube from the airport to Hammersmith, change to the District Line (walk to the opposite platform) and get off at Embankment. Your hotel is a 5 minute walk down the Strand from the station exit (you will walk through the Charing Cross train station to the Strand, there may be some stairs from the tube station platform.

Alternatively, since you're staying in a rather expensive hotel, why not contact the hotel and have a car service pick you up at Heathrow?

My suggestion would be to take the Heathrow Express of Heathrow Connect to Paddington and then take a cab to your hotel.

It will cost a bit more, but it will be much easier.

However, if you insist on taking the tube, here's a link to an accessible tube map"

The easiest way to figure this out is to head over to the London Transport journey planner (http://tinyurl.com/2hubn) It will give you the option choosing a route that has no stairs, escalators, ect.
You can also specifically enter "Trafalgar Hilton" in the destination box; so you'll get very specific directions.

Actually I would not recommend a cab from Paddington to Trafalger Square. It's quite a long way and the cab fare plus the cost of the Heathrow Express would be more than the cost of having the hotel send a car to pick you up at the airport. Plus we don't know what time you are arriving at Heathrow. Cabs are more expensive on the weekends than on weekdays. We paid 10 pounds from South Kensington to Paddington, I would imagine it would be at least twice that from Trafalger Square.

A pre-booked sedan (saloon car) for up to 4 people and light luggage will run about 40 GBP plus tip from Heathrow to your hotel.

How many are you? Are you capable of walking and just have problems with stairs? How about escalators? You'll need to find a station with working elevators or escalators. The journey planner will help.

Heathrow Connect is about 7 GBP per person and it's about 3 miles from Paddington to your hotel. That should be between 15 and 20 GBP. (The taxi rate varies by time and day of the week.)

There will be two of us, both retired ladies. We did the stairs thing lugging suitcases several times before and it is not fun. I was just looking for an easier way. I love the HEX, but Paddington Station is quite a ways from the Trafalgar. Any more suggestions?

Linda, the hotel should be able to send a car for you for pickup at the airport. Or just take a London taxi which will be a little more expensive, but well worth it as they are the only vehicles that can use the bus lanes other than busses.

The only other way is to take a coach to Victoria Coach Station (a few blocks from Victoria Rail Station) and then a cab to your hotel.

No stairs except on and off the bus. The driver takes your luggage on the bus.

If you consider a door-to-door car service, you should know that many people on the Fodors board recommend Just Airports. There is a sizeable discount for paying cash. Your hotel is in SW1 so the cash price for a saloon (sedan) would be £30.

I had a bad experience with them several years ago on transport from Heathrow to Holiday Inn Kensington Forum. I was quoted one price and the driver tried to almost double that. The doorman had to ask him to leave the premises. I don't think I want to deal with them again.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Just Airports. It looks like I'll have to take the recommendations I've read with a grain of salt.

If you need to avoid stairs, Frank's suggestion to take a National Express coach to Victoria and a taxi from there sounds good to me. The coach fare is only £4.
