Heathrow to Stansted Airports with some time to spare

I will be arriving at Heathrow at 6am and will be flying out of Stansted to seville at 5pm that evening. The easiest way to get between the two airports seems to be the 22 pound airport transfer with a bus company. But I'm thinking that since we'll have that extra time, we should take the train into the city and see a few sites.

Does that sound possible, or would it be too much running around for a couple hours of sightseeing. Any suggestions as to how we should go about this or what area we could feasibly see in the short amount of time we'll have?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

There's a left luggage facility in Stansted and Cambridge is only 50 minutes away by coach or by train.

I think I would plan to head straight to Stansted, drop my luggage, and then go into Cambridge for an early lunch.

If you plan to do this by train there is no need to book tickets in advance and so if, for example, your flight is late you can simply grab something to eat at Stansted and won't have spent money on a ticket unnecessarily.

Cheers

Going into the city would probably be more trouble than it's worth with such a short time. However, it's only 15 or 20 minutes from LHR over to Windsor where you can tour the castle and see the changing of the guard (11:00am). Plan to be back at Heathrow about 1:00pm to catch the bus to Stansted... it's about an hour trip, but allow extra time for possible traffic delays on the M-25. The local bus over to Windsor makes a lot of stops en route, so it's worth hiring a taxi.

Thanks for your responses. I think we'll definitely look into seeing something instead of sitting at the airport all day!!

If you decide to go into London, buy one day, zone 1-6 travelcards (£14.80 before 09:30 on weekdays, £7.50 anytime on weekends) and take the Tube to Liverpool Street (Piccadilly Line to Holborn and Central Line to Liverpool Street). The travel time is 1hr7min. Store your bags at the mainline train station. Take the Tube to get to whatever you choose to see in the time you have. Return to Liverpool Street and take either the Terravision bus or the Stansted Express train to Stansted. For information on both the bus and the train, go here.

I agree with Tim. If you've never been to London, go for it. You should get a few hours to sightsee.

The one suggestion I would make it to think about taking the hop-on/hop-off bus tour. Take it once around fully to get a glimpse of all the major sights then perhaps go around again and get off at one of two sights for a quick visit.

Follow Tim's timing advice to be back at Liverpool by about 1:00 for the bus to Stansted.
