My husband and I will be flying into Heathrow on a Wednesday around 11:30am and are wondering what is the best way to get to our hotel which is located in between Victoria Station and Pimlico Station. We've received differing reports on taking the Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect and the tube. We will have one medium sized suitcase and probably two backpacks. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as this is our first trip to London. Thanks!
I always take the tube in from Heathrow, although then I stay in Bloomsbury which means I don't need to change. You should change to the District line at Hammersmith, where you won't have to bother with stairs. I do it with a backpack and daypack so you should be fine. If you take the train it will only get you to Paddington so you'd still need to take a taxi or the tube, and it would cost a lot more.
I totally agree with Kathy, in fact, I stayed at a hotel between Victoria and Pimlico myself last October. Take the tube from Heathrow, change to the District Line at Hammersmith, where you will simply walk about 15 feet to the other side of the platform to catch it and get off at Victoria Station. It's much cheaper & more direct to your hotel than the Heathrow Express.
We have opted for National Express Coach from Heathrow as we are staying at the Lime Tree Hotel, just a few minutes from Victoria Coach Station near where you may be also. It is 5 pounds per person, and the convenience outweighs the 50 minutes or so the trip will take. You can buy and print the tickets ahead of time.
Although most recently I have used Heathrow Express and also the Tube; when I first flew into Heathrow, there was a red double-deck bus service from Heathrow to two or three places in London. Although much slowr, it was interesting to be above ground and see what you were passing through (long before all the traffic though). So if you are not in a hurry, the coach would replicate that
We took the "regular" Tube from Heathrow to Victoria Station and had to make one change from the Picadilly line to District or Circle to get to Victoria station. Quick and easy and not hard with rolling suitcases. We were getting London TravelCards anyway (which we bought right at the station in the basement at Heathrow), so the trip didn't cost us more than the pass which covered Zones 1-6 anyway. The Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect cost a whole lot more and only take you to Paddington Station which is nowhere near where you are going. A portion of the trip is above ground so you can see things if you are interested.
