Months ago I read of a way to travel via train from Heathrow to Edinburgh without having to go via London. Not that we dislike London but we have been there several times already. As I recall one took a bus?? to a small town station and then caught one of the regular London-Edinburgh trains.
Wish I had written it down!
You can take the railair coach to Reading and pick up a cross country train there but you will need to change again later on (York / Newcastle) these days. Being at Heathrow already flying to Edinburgh would be quicker and more convenient IMO.
Marco: Thank you for the prompt response. I checked it out and it looks fine for our needs. Plane may well be better.
Still "debating" London as a stop too. We do love it.
I would recommend flight to Edinburgh or even Manchester.
You can take a train from Manchester Airport to spend a night or two in York. Then travel onto Edinburgh.
Ought to have mentioned that Reading station is a building site at the moment as five more platforms are being added to this busy interchange. Most of the original platform buildings have already been demolished, and the platforms are now narrower than usual. None of this is a problem in that the trains are all still running, but it makes the environment more difficult to negotiate. I'd still suggest flying - and if you are departing out of Heathrow, stopping off on the return journey.
We purchased a BritRail pass from Rick Steves (go figure). Landed at Heathrow, cleared Borde Control, picked up our bag. We activated our pass, took the Heathrow Express to Paddington, purchased an Oyster Tube pass. We then took two tubes to Euston and were on our way to North Wales. Total elapsed time from aircraft door opening to the train leaving the station one hour and twenty minutes. No fuss no muss.
Robert, If you have no interest in stopping in London, travel by air to Edinburgh would be the easiest option since you'll be at Heathrow anyway. IMO, that would be far easier than taking a combination of Trains and Buses, especially after a long international flight. I travelled that route last year, and used a BMI flight from LHR to EDI. It was a very easy trip. Happy travels!
My thanks to all who have replied to my question.
Good advice and much appreciated.
