We arrive in London/Heathrow at 7:00 a.m. Just two of us but we will have a couple of larger bags and one carry on. Question - we want to buy a 7 Day Travel Card, but I read that if we buy the card at Heathrow it's not a Main Line station so we would miss out on some of the 2 for one discounts offered with the 7 Day Travel Card. The tube goes right to South Ken from Heathrow as opposed to taking the Connect train to Paddington and then transfer to the Tube. Question, if Paddington is a "main line" stop then is the best plan to take Connect to Paddington, buy the 7 Day Card there so as to get the discounts and then take the tube to South Ken, right near our hotel? OR - just Tube or just Connect? Thanks!
Marie, You need to buy your travel card at a train station, as opposed to a "main line" station. In order to get the 2 for one discounts, your card must have the National Rail "crows foot" logo on it. You might also want to register online for the 2 for one discounts you think you might use and print them up ahead of time. We did receive a booklet for the discounts when we bought our passes in September, but I seem to remember that some posters were glad they printed the offers ahead of time because the station where they purchased their cards were out of the discount brochures. If you're only going to be in London for 7 days, then it might be best to take the train to Paddington and buy your travel cards there. Then you can use them on the tube to get to your hotel. If you're going to be in London longer, then I would buy a single ticket or an Oyster card (which ever fits your time frame) at Heathrow and go directly to your hotel so you can get rid of your bags. We were in London for 10 days and used an Oyster card to travel on the tube until our sightseeing took us near a train station (Victoria) and then we bought the 7 day travel card.
Going from Heathrow to South Kensington via Paddington would take you well out of your way. Buy Oyster cards at Heathrow and load them with some pay-as-you-go pounds to cover your ride from Heathrow to South Kensington on the Tube and any other rides you take beyond zone 2 while you're in London, including returning to Heathrow. Top them up as needed. You can get a refund of unspent pounds plus your deposit after you return to Heathrow. From Heathrow take the Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith, walk a few feet to the other side of the platform, and take the District Line to South Kensington. Use your Oyster cards to take the Tube from South Kensington to Victoria. Buy your 7-day, zone 1-2 National Rail paper travelcards at the Victoria National Rail station.
Thanks for the posts. I tried to sign up for the 2-1 vouchers but unless I am missing something, the online form doesn't accomodate a United States address. Thoughts?
Marie, Any reason you couldn't use the address you will have in London? They don't check, and the information doesn't go anywhere. Or you can pick up a brochure usually at a station. I saw some today at Euston Station in London.
Thanks, Nigel. I could try that. Any thoughts on where I should buy the Travel Card in order to claim the discounts? I take it the Tube station at LHR is not an option? If we take the tube to Paddington, would we get it there? I appreciate your help.
Marie, Paddington Station is fine as long as you buy the passes at the train station, not the tube station. It's a little confusing since you're buying the passes for the tube, but you need to purchase them from a National Rail station. You will probably be just fine getting the 2 for 1 brochure at the station at this time of the year. However, if you want to try online again, this is what I did. I chose Paddington as my local station, entered my US street address and city, chose "other" for the county and then entered my zip code as the postal code. The site seemed to be just fine with that. Good luck and enjoy your trip!
