This might help: http://www.hay-on-wye.co.uk/info/hay-on-wye.htm Note that there is no direct rail service to Hay. If you are planning on spending a night or three in Hay, the obvious advice is to book early. It's not a very big place. If you book away from the town center, be sure you know how you are getting there from your hotel/b&b. The festival is fun. You'll have a great time. Just be prepared to pay to ship your purchases back home.

We took a rental car from Heathrow and drove - stayed at a B&B in the town center. We used Hay-in-Wye as our base - stayed there for 3 days and saw the town and took day trips out from there.

Hay-on-Wye is wonderful! But as you probably found out, difficult to get to without a car. But for those planning Welsh trips, be sure to visit this little town which has almost 40 used bookstores. It's a delight.
