Handicapped parking in the UK

My mother has a breathing issue and has been issued a handicapped windows card. How do we go about getting one to use in the UK? Or is it not possible?
Thanks in advance.

I have used my handicapped placard for 4 trips in UK, Scotland, Ireland and France. Never a problem. They were always honored.

Hi Kristopher,

Bear in mind that if you are parking in "on-street" parking spaces in British towns and cities, you may be exempt from paying charges. The situation is different from town to town. If you park in multi-storeys (garages) you will always pay the full rate.

Try searching for the town council for whichever towns you are visiting. Details of where there are free parking bays for disabled badge holders (sometimes referred to as 'blue-badges' in the UK) are usually on the council website. There may also be maps of dedicated disable parking bays.

I used to have blue badges for disabled parking here in the UK, when I was looking after my parents.
The blue badge allows you to park in the specially disabled parking bays of parking lots. But it doesn't necessarily mean they are free. They are usually only free when your vehicle has been exempted from paying road tax, because it is owned by a disabled person; I would imagine you'll be using rental vehicles, so they won't have that priveledge.

So, if you display the badge you should be OK to park in designated disabled parking spaces, but will probably still have to pay the fee.

The blue badges also allow you to park on single yellow lines, and sometimes on double yellow lines, unless there are 3 yellow lines on the curb, in which case, no-one can park there at all. Ever. On pain of giant traffic warden witch descending on broomstick.
