How much time should we plan for our Hadrian's Wall stop over? Is 3 or 4 hours enough time to see all that is worth seeing there or do we need more time?
After LOTS of research, we chose this for our half-day Hadrian's Wall stop last summer: drove from York to Once Brewed where there's a visitor's center........had lunch at the Twice Brewed pub which has lots of information / historical photos about the wall........walked east on the section of the wall across the road from that area (moderate hike, wear good shoes for walking, it's steep at the beginning, then fairly level) to the famous sycamore tree that's at the beginning of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.......drove east a couple of miles where we walked around the Housesteads Fort area for about an hour......then drove on to Alnwick (Edlingham Castle which is on the way is worth a brief stop, very atmospheric) where we visited the gardens the next day.........the wall features prominently in the King Arthur movie if you like a bit of pre-trip mood-setting
It really depends on what you want to do. I spent nearly a day and others hike the length of the Wall. I liked Housesteads and it's a large site. There may or may not be events http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/housesteads-roman-fort-hadrians-wall/. I also enjoyed Chesters, a smaller fort, and I walked a bit of the wall. Here's another great website. http://www.hadrianswall-northumberland.com/hadrianswall/home Pam
Thank you both for the information. I was wanting to see Housteads Roman Fort, Hike the wall a bit and see the museum at Vindolanda and eat lunch while we were at the wall as well. I couldn't tell how long the 2 museums should take.
