We are driving from York to Alnwick and want to visit part of Hadrian's Wall. Which part of the wall would be best between Newcastle and Hexham?

Could you stretch it by five or ten miles to Haydon Bridge and scoot up to Housesteads?

Housesteads and Vindolana (not part of the wall but a Roman townsite with excellent museum a little way south of it) are not far west of Hexham, probably the best sites on the eastern part of the wall. Hexham also has a wonderful old church with Roman paintings in the crypt.
