Is it realistic to think that we could obtain grounds passes for Wimbledon during the first week of the tournament for later in the afternoon? My daughter is not a huge tennis fan but would go for a few hours later in the day. Any suggestions on the best way to accomplish this if it seems possible?
People usually queue for hours before the opening to get grounds passes and I mean hours!!!! I don't know if it is still possible to get in the afternoon.
I think not but perhaps someone else knows??????
There is some information on the Wimbledon site: http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about/tickets/queue.html#joiningthequeue
I have never been, but a colleague did this last year and I think she queued for about 4 hours. They did bring out drinks and free gifts for the people in the queue, but I am not sure I'd want to do it!
A few of years ago my wife and I entered the lottery and won seats in court one. Lately, not so luckey so we stand in the queue for about two hours. Yes, we go fairly early in the day in an attempt to beat the crowd. Early is best. The first few days of week one of the Championship you will encounter the shortest lines. If you take the tube remember to get off at "Southfields" not "Wimbledon Park." Simply exit the tube turn right and follow the crowd for about a mile to the grounds. There are city buses that run from just outside the tube station to the grounds as well. Because the total number of the crowd is capped, later in the day it's one person exits - one enters. It's worth it. You will be standing/sitting 10-15 feet from the players. Play ends around 8PM. It's fun.
Thanks so much for all of your tips and insight. We will be there during the first week of the championships and may try to go during the week. I just watched Andre and Steffi play Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters on Centre Court with the new roof...I don't think I can miss seeing Wimbledon (even though I know I won't be able to get into Centre Court).
This is a link to the official Wimbledon page regarding ground passes.
