Green bus to Windsor Castle

We will be staying in the Earls Court/Kensington area and are interested in travelling to Windsor Castle. I read about the Green bus/busline going there but it couldn't/wouldn't tell the fare. It said it depends on time of day, lenght of ride, etc. My question is: does anyone have any idea of the cost? Just wondering because of trying to decide between oyster card and travelcard. Would the oyster even be valid on the green bus? Thanks!

Firstly you cannot use an Oyster Card to pay a fare on Green Line and it is outside the travel card area as well. The fares are banded on the 701/702 to Windsor. Costs are at http://www.rainbowfares.com/tickets/dayfares.php You can tell which band any particular coach is from the timetable: http://www.greenline.co.uk/uploadedFiles/Services/South_East/SELN701,702_240412_200412.pdf There is a day return fare - but is stated as not available from London Seems overly complicated to me, but this is a service for commuters into London as well as taking tourists out of London.

Thank you for the reply. It does seem complicated to me, which is what I was trying to avoid, by just taking a bus to Windsor, rather than tube, bus, rail combination thereof. Doesn't make sense that there is not a return fare back to London. But I guess I could purchase 2 individual tickets. Other than that, what would you suggest the best/least complicated way to get to Windsor Castle? I would be willing to travel from Earl's court to a better starting point if necessary. Thanks so much.

I posted before looking at the fares and timetables. If I am reading them correctly, it looks like I could travel to Windsor for about 9pounds and return for 3.50 pounds. What Windsor stop is closet to the castle? Parish? Hospital? Does that fare compare with other routes to get to Windsor, ie rail, bus, tube? Geesh, I wish this wasn't so complicated, or at least seems complicated.
Thanks again.

We stayed in Earls Court area, took tube to train station, can't remember which one, and then took train to Windsor. Have no idea how much it cost but the train stopped within maybe five to ten minutes walk to castle. There are many people who post here who live in the UK and can be more help than I am but it is not that complicated. Enjoy.

The quickest route by train is to get the train from Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central. Looking on the First Great Western website I get fares of £9 single or £16 return without discounts. You may be able to get a cheaper ticket from them in advance though this means tying yourself to specific train times. Trains are every thirty minutes or so changing at Slough.

The tube doesn't go to Windsor. Taking the Green bus would be a 70 minute trip. The best and easiest is by taking the train from Paddington Station, it's a 35 minute trip. You can get a return ticket (round trip) for £9.20.

Robin,
I believe you are right that the train from Paddington would be quickest. However, when I checked the fare, it was 9 pounds each way, not round trip. Please tell me where you got your fare information because if I'm not looking correctly, I'd like to know how to find the better deal. Thanks! I just went back to the website and looked again. if I leave the return open for the same day, I can get the ticket for 9.50 return. Good to know I just needed to try other options. And it seems that next day or next month, the price is the same, so I shouldn't have to book in advance. Thanks for making me doublecheck!

Debroah....you don't have to leave the return open...this is off the Nationalrail.co.uk website.... Windsor & Eton Central Platform 1, London Paddington Platform 4...£9.50 Off-peak this is for if you leave around 9:21am and return around 6:28pm......... But if you want to take an earlier train out to Windsor around 8am it would be £12.70 for a return...which is good also.

Train from paddington to Windsor Central is really simple. There is one change (slough?) and you end up just a few minutes walk from the Castle. you will need to take the tube to paddington, but that is relatively simple. Much easier and faster than green Line bus
