I'm planning a trip to Göteborg and Västra Götaland area of Sweden where my grandparents came from (Vasa, Borås, Skövde areas). Any suggestions of places to stay? Best way to travel this area? (rent a car, train, other?) Love to hear anyone's advice about this area of Sweden.
Greetings
I visited Goteborg briefly last December, though didn't see that much because of the floods.
There are two airports in the Goteborg area, so you might be able to connect from another European city - i.e. Copenhagen etc. SAS and some discount airlines fly into the Goteborg airports.
Alternatively, you can take the train from Copenhagen or (I assume) Stockholm. It's about 3.5 to 4 hours from Copenhagen depending on the train, and saves you the hassle of dealing with airports. The train stops at the Copenhagen Airport, you can go from plane to train.
Sweden is well served by trains and public transport (there are buses, trains and trams in & around Goteborg), so unless you are going really off the beaten path, public transport is probably your best option. Remember that petrol is more than $7-8 per gallon so even if you get a good deal on rental, it's not cheap to keep the car going!

Hi Linda,
I've been to Skövde on business. I can't help you with accommodations as I did this as a day trip from Stockholm. Skövde is on the train line between Stockholm and Göteborg. You could easily do this as a day trip from Göteborg.
The best transportation method will depend on what you want to see. I would not bother with a car in Göteborg. For the other areas, will you be staying in the town or exploring the countryside? If you are exploring the countryside, a car will give you more flexibility.
