Can anyone recomend a decent hotel in this area please?
We are planning a trip just prior to Christmas and am having difficulties getting any replies via the emails ive sent to the hotels in the RS Guide book London":
We like the Victoria Thistle/Grosovner. It is right in Victoria Station. It may spluging a bit compaired to some smaller hotels, but the location is well worth it to us. We don't use their resturant, it is way too pricy, but there are lots of good pubs and resturants within walking distance. In the station there are grocery stores and food stalls as well as a book store, Boots druggists, electronic stores (my hubby is a techno geek), and other shops as well as fast food like McDonald's and KFC. We fly into Gatwick, so the Gatwick Express works well and the Tube is right out the hotel door.
I haven't stayed but the name I have seen pop up here and Rick's book a lot is the Cherry Court Hotel. May be worth checking out.
Hi Susan,
My wife and I stayed at the Sidney Hotel last year. It is only a few blocks from Victoria Station. It was very easy to access the tube at either Pimlico or Victoria. Easy access to buses also. The rooms are small, but clean. Prices are decent. Website: http://www.sidneyhotel.com/
Susan,
You might try This Hotel in the Belgravia/Victoria Station area. It's not luxurious but the rooms are very comfortable, the hosts are wonderful and the neighborhood is great (there's a nice Wine Bar at the end of the block and if you like awesome Italian food, Santini's is an easy walk from the Hotel; it was reportedly Sinatra's favourite).
Happy travels!
We liked the Cherry Court. It is definitely small with few "amenities" but very friendly and cheap (by London standards).
We like the Winchester Hotel behind VS and have used it twice along with the Lime Tree which is bit more expensive but closer the VS.
Just got back a few days ago and again stayed at the Luna and Simone on Belgrave Road. They're doing some reno's on the exterior just now so a few scaffolding bits in place but I'll not stay anywhere else when in London.
They never cease to amaze; great hotel, great prices, clean as a whistle, and they never stop improving. Check out Trip Advisor to see where the hotel seems always to be in the top 15+/- for the whole of London; incredible and rightly deserved.
You won't see them in RSteves and for the life of me I don't know why. I paid 70GBP for a single but they upgraded me to a double for the same price. If there's only two of you ask for room 8; you'll get a balcony which I had last week and was nice as I enjoy a smoke now and again.
Try The Lime Tree on Ebury Street. Nice area, nice Davies family who run the place.
Before you book, check out the place on www.tripadvisor.com. Also, if you go back to the Graffiti wall and click on the share your feedback guidebooks, and go to London and best and worst of accomodations you'll get skads of info. Beware that on both places someone will call it the best ever and the next person might say NEVER stay there. We also enjoyed our stay at the Winchester Hotel.
I really appreciate all of your input and have continued to e mail the accomodations you all suggest.
Interesting that I am from the UK mysef (living in FL) and Ive not spent any time much in London for the 30 odd years I lived there!
A big Thank You!
Susan
As some of the others have mentioned, the Winchester Hotel is nice. Comfortable, but smallish rooms. Excellent breakfast. We stayed there a couple years ago, and while there checked out several other places in the area. We are going back this summer, and booked the Winchester again.
We stayed at the Thistle Westminster. It got mixed reviews on tripadvisor but we thought it was fine. It is getting a little tired-looking, but it was clean and central...we also got a really good deal on expedia though and I'm not sure I'd want to pay full price...
We're staying at the Lime Tree Hotel in July. I received immediate responses when I emailed about our booking and they were extremely friendly (via email--haven't talked to them on the phone.) Haven't stayed there yet, but the pictures online look nice.
The Limetree Hotel on Ebury street is really a nice place. Matt and Charlotte manage the property now. Charlotte's parents own it, and they have recently turned it over to Matt and Charlotte. Both of them are on site every day. The breakfast is nice and the area quiet and a short walk from Victoria tube station. We've stayed there 3 times.
Lime Tree is in a nice location but pricey. Take a look at Barclay House, right around the corner from Fulham Broadway tube station. Very highly rated on Tripadvisor, and 88 pounds a night including breakfast.
We stayed at the Cherry Court..the rooms are small but adequate. Don't stay in your room that much.
I'd like to second the Luna and Simone suggestion. Great breakfast, clean accommodations, friendly folks and best of all, the #24 bus stops right outside the door and will whisk you to most places you'll want to go.
I stayed at Luna and Simone last year. Bus 24 is RIGHT outside the door, which was very convenient. It gets great TripAdvisor ratings, and Rick now mentions it in his book.
I always stay at the Morgan House on Ebury St, very close to Victoria Station. They're very friendly, rooms are fine, breakfast is great!! I get a single and bathrooms are in the hall tho.
Lime Tree on Ebury St. It is close, clean, and run by great people. There are some big hotels in Victoria, but Lime Tree feels more like a B&B and is full of travelers. Send Email to Lime Tree, or just call in the mid-afternoon local time and you will likely get the owners. Charlotte will fix you up and if you are there off season you can probably get a good deal.
We stayed at the Windermere Hotel (www.windermere-hotel.co.uk) which is at the corner of Warwick Way and Alderney, 10 minutes from Victoria Station. My daughter and I stayed there on two occasions in two different double rooms (one standard ensuite with a shower and one deluxe ensuite with a bathtub). Both rooms were great (small but clean and comfortable) but what made this place stand out was the service. The staff were amazingly welcoming and helpful, greeting us by name when we arrived (how did they do that?!) and carrying our luggage up to the room for us. The breakfasts were fantastic and filling, and the dinner was also available in this hotel. The chef was very very accommodating, preparing a very basic dish for my daughter and charging us very little for this special dish (well, it was lightly buttered penne with fresh parmesan and a side of steamed veg). The area is great to walk around. On our first night we walked over to the Lambeth Bridge, along the Southbank up to Westminster Bridge, and back across, wandering around the neighbourhood. Another day we walked all the way to the British Museum (3.5 miles I think) which took us several hours because we kept finding fun places to relax and people watch. One evening we saw Wicked at the Apollo near Victoria Station and walked back to the Windermere Hotel at 10:30pm and it was still light out with lots of people around and the atmosphere was very vibrant and fun. On our final day we actually walked all the way to Paddington Station which took us two hours but which took us past Buckingham Palace (where we stopped to watch the changing of the guards), and through Hyde Park which was beautiful and green.
The Windermere Hotel has quite good reviews on tripadvisor. The main complaints seem to be about the size of the rooms and the lack of elevators but these are typical issues with rooms in Europe and we did not find these issues to be a problem.
Cherry Court Hotel or Blades Hotel...I’ve stayed at both and can recommend them as very clean and affordable.
I agree with Ken. We stayed at the Cartref House just last month and was very pleased with the location and the room. Very convient.
Thanks to all of you for your helpful suggestions.
I have picked the Luna Simone, though it was a really tough choice.
I truly appreciate all of your input.
Susan
as i write this i am in the Vandon House Hotel. Which is just fine if you are going to be out most of the time. Short walks to lots of things.
Quiet, clean, pretty good breakfast, singers in the back on thier roof
