We'd really like to stay for 4-5 days in one place, taking day trips in Kerry and Cork (Dingle peninsula, Beara peninsula, Killary Nat'l Park, exploring family roots in mountains between Cork and Kerry, maybe even Cashel, etc). But it's been many years since I was last in Ireland, and I'm having a hard time finding an appropriate base (short distances become difficult if there's a mountain in the way). I'm thinking about Kenmare, which I remember as a lovely town. What would be reasonable day trips from Kenmare? And do you have any other suggestions for good base camps for exploring Cork and Kerry?

Kenmare is lovely and the location is perfect as a base for the areas you wish to see. However, I recommend that you spend one night in Dingle so you can stay late for traditional music sessions in one or more Dingle pubs.
