My husband would like to play a round of golf when we go to England next year. Where will he find the best golf packages? He is curious about St. Andrew golf course.
My dad and sister were fortunate enough to get to play the Old Course several years ago. In addition to making it through the lottery, they had to provide verification from their home golf pro of their handicaps. St. Andrew's is, of course, in Scotland, not England.
Kelly - The most common way of getting a tee time for St Andrews Old Course is the Ballot or as Robin mentioned got to the starters hut. There are several golf vacation websites available, SGHGOLF.COM, sterlinggolftours.com, & golfpacinternational.com. I find them to be extremely expensive. Now if he is just looking for a day of golf here is a golf guide for course in the UK. UK Golf Guide.
If you have any other questions shoot me a pm.
Kelly, you don't have to play a lottery to play at St. Andrews. You can go to the starters hut by the first tee, first thing in the morning the day you want to play and sign up.....they will add you to another group of two or three. Your husband will need to get a card from the course he plays here that states his handicap. My husband had done this several times.
TripAdvisor has a forum devoted to golf. You might want to check it out. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186485-i107-k3554376-NEW_Golf_Vacations_forum-Scotland.html
Pam
it is very pricey!!!! St Andrews is in Scotland.
Hi Kelly- My husband has done the same thing Robin
mentioned. He did go very early but got on both times
and was lucky enough to play with 3 locals which he still
considers one of his top ten travel experiences.
Thank you for your help. Yes, I know St. Andrews is in Scotland, my error when I asked the question.
"Tell me I'm dreaming (or rather having a nightmare). You've traveled all the way to the UK to practice the world's most boring sport?"
James, Yes I have on numerous occasions. At least you acknowledge Golf is a sport. I also believe I saw Rick playing on Royal Portrush in his show on Northern Ireland.
I played St.Andrews old course in May. We were entered in the ballot but didnt get a time so the next morning we went to the St.Andrews Old Course starters building at 4:30AM>(We really wanted to play)There were 4 persons ahead of us and we got a t time where all three of us could play together. We missed a lot of sleep but it was worth it.I think that 1 person could show up much later as the starter doesnt arrive until 6:45.The first time is at 7AM so you have to be ready to play if you would get the early time. It was a hassle but well worth it.
