Golf in Scotland and Ireland

Any advice on getting on the famous or not so famous courses? Love golf, and would love to playanywhere-not just St Andrews. But tee times seem scarce, and the best advice I have ad is try 48 hours ahead of time. Any experience with this. Thank you, Linda

Have you tried asking on the TripAdvisor Golf Forum? They have lots of advice there for golfers. Also, the Scotland forum on TA has lots of good advice for golfers. Also, lots of the small towns and villages have local golf courses. You might look for places that you want to visit for other reasons and see what the local golfing is like. Scots don't all golf at the high end spots. ; ) VisitScotland has site with info. Have you checked it out? http://golf.visitscotland.com/ There's a great search function here that can tell you about different courses. You can search by location, cost and type of course. Pam

To play on St. Andrews Old Course you would need to go to the starter box (it's by the first tee) first thing in the morning around 7am, they will take your name. They will put you with another group of two or three players. My husband played there several times, he loves it and has always enjoyed the people he was put with. Also, it's very important that you have a card from your home course stating your handicap, if you don't have that you won't be able to play.

My friend showed up as a single at St. Andrews and had no trouble getting added to a threesome of locals. I think it's much harder trying to get a start time for a foursome.
