We always stay at the Royal York Hotel, attached to the train station. So I can't recommend a b&b. But I can recommend a WONDERFUL place to eat! Try Gert and Henery's. It is in a half-timber house at the edge of the market and the Shambles. Great food.

My wife and I stayed (Oct 2009) at the Abbeyfields Guest House. It's just outside the city wall, but an easy walk to the town center. The owners could not have been nicer. Generally they get mostly Brits as visitors and were surprised (I think) to have Americans show up, but that may have changed. We found them through the Rick Steves' guide that was current at the time. Good sized rooms, IMO, and the full English breakfasts were great.

I stayed at the Abbingdon Guest House last summer; it is about a 15 min walk from the walled part of York, on a street lined with B&Bs. I really loved my stay there, very nice owners, a wonderful breakfast included, and the bed was wicked comfy!

Last fall we stayed at the St. Raphael Guest House (mentioned in Rick's book), a very short walk to the walled portion of York. The owners Dom and Zoe are extremely knowledgeable and helpful; and your breakfast is cooked to order, with two different types of bread freshly baked there each morning. One place you can't miss is Betty's Tea Room, which is on Stonegate and very close to The Minster.

Be sure to do the free walking tour mentioned in Rick Steves. It gives you an overview of York (which isn't all that big) and you can go back to spend more time at places that look interesting.

We enjoyed the Abbey Guest House, right on the river, a few blocks from the walls and Minster. You can walk along the riverbank to the major sights. We had a good dinner at Melton's Too on Walmgate. Best sights were York Minster (with a good tour, interesting crypt, and evensong) and the Yorkshire Museum. We weren't as thrilled as RS with the York Castle Museum. Great railroad museum for people who like such, not so much us.

The Barbican B&B is very nice, great breakfast and across the street from the old walls.

We really enjoyed York-nice walking town. We stayed at the Holiday Inn across the street from a castle tower-great view.
