We will be going to london on the 1st of April - what would be the best airport to fly into and also has anyone have an information on the Dover Hotel?
If you are heading to London on a transatlantic flight you don't have much of a choice. Most all flights go to Heathrow; a small minority use Gatwick. If given the choice I use Gatwick as it's smaller and more manageable. Both airports are well connected to the city center via the Tube(Heathrow), airport express trains (Heathrow and Gatwick), and commuter trains(Gatwick).
There is no "best" airport. You choose your fare on the airline which offers the best one. You land where the plane lands.
As for getting into London, you can read comments made previously by others on this page on that subject. Also read the archives.
Actually, I'd have to disagree with Carl on this one. If I can, I try to fly into Gatwick airport, because it's smaller and seems to have far less chance of getting tied up in knots if something goes wrong (like Heathrow does seemingly every day.) As Michael notes, there is the Gatwick Express, which takes about half an hour to Victoria station, and the local trains which only take five minutes longer to make the run, and cost about 40% less. British Airways, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways fly into Gatwick from several American cities....so if you plan to use them, you should be able to get a flight just as cheaply as their services into Heathrow.
I've never flown into Gatwick, but have flown into/through Heathrow a few times. My vote here is for Gatwick, based on the assumption it can't be any worse than that disorganized mess they call Heathrow. It just can't!
Thanks everyone for you great replays. I made my reservations and will fly in Gatwick. My husbands dream is to see Stonehedge so this is definately a place we will be visiting. I would like to do a tour from London. Is there any tour guide that's better than another? I just want to make sure to get Stonehedge in the tour. I've read alot of replys on Stonehedge some good some bad - it is one of the 7 Wonders of the World so not sure why anyone wouldn't want to see it!! Thanks again for all your replys - I'm sure I will have more questions as I go along planning the trip-just need to find a pillow to put our heads on at night!!
Check out the London Walks website: www.walks.com Their Explorer Days trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge might be something to consider. I've done their Jack the Ripper, Literary Bloomsbury and Little Venice walks. All stellar and a great way to get inside info and history. You will love Stonehenge. Just don't be disappointed that there is a major highway near by.
We've used Frames Rickard's in the past. They do what the British call Coach (we'd call bus) tours. You can do Bath and Stonehenge in one day with them.
