After my RS tour of Scotland, I am staying 5 days and then leaving out of London. I will be taking public transportation, no car, and was wondering the best way to get from Edinburge to London seeing the best of the UK. I love Castles and would love to stay overnight in one if it is not too expensive. Seasoned travelers, which route would you take and what would you stop to see.
Thanks Anne
Cardiff Wales is a great, funky, lively city. Lots of interesting old shopping arcades and markets. Very good resturants. The castle is right in town and is also good. The harbor has recently been "redone" and is supposed to be very nice.
Snowdonia is a great rural area. Betws-y-Coed is a nice small village in the Snowdonia National Park area. Take the steam train up Mt. Snowdon for some marvelous views. Lots of nice walks/hikes in pastoral surroundings.
I've been to York and can recommend that as a great city to visit. It's very walkable, has a wall and medieval street maze.
Swan is correct, York makes a geat stop between London and Edinburgh. Catch the train at Kings Cross- it is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to York. if you take the 9:00 train you are in York in time for lunch. Then wander around the Shambles and the market. There is also the Jorvic museum- it covers the history of York via a Disney-esque ride through time. You can also do a cruise on the river Ouse. Don't forget the Minster- it is beautiful. We like to stay at the station hotel. I think its name is The Royal York. Very nice to catch the next morning's train to Edinburgh.
So far I am looking at Edinburgh to York then to Wales and then The Cotswolds, then Oxford and to London. Does this seem doable?
I have already spent a week in London and went to Bath and stonehenge so I don't need to spend time there.
Where would be the best place to stay in Wales?
