Glasgow, Edinburgh

We have 4 days to split between Glasgow and Edinburgh what are the things we must see and do. We enjoy history and museums. Pub dining and pub entertainment.

Darrell - I agree with Bob. 2 days and 1 night in Glasgow is enough time. I find the Glasgow Catherdal, Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) & Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum are interesting. In Edinburgh, I like the Castle, The National Museums and the Royal Mile. You may also want to look into taking Ghost tour at night. I would highly recommend Mercat Tours. By the way Glasgow is about an hours train ride from Edinburgh. You may want to look at spending all 4 days in Edinburgh and do Glasgow as a day trip. A same day return will run about £21.00 per person.

IMHO With 4 days to split we would spend 3 nights in Edinburgh and 1 night in Glasgow. Edinburgh has the castle, the royal mile, the palace, the parliament, the Britannia, and on and on....Glasgow has some interesting sights but we would spend the extra night in Inverness. Enjoy your trip.

Agree with posters. In Edinburgh, be sure to see Mary King's Close, I have recommended so many times you would think I work for them. Anyway, I think we first saw it on one of Ricks shows. It is just down from the castle and was fascinating for us. Look it up on web. We also enjoyed the Royal Yacht, I think about half hour bus ride from town and we thought well worth it. We were there off season and had no problem getting into anything. Also look up grey friars bobby (Spelling?) just down from cathedral. When we went to the museum, woman there asked why we were there as they were doing a survey. Told her because of Rick's book, she said we were eight out of ten people she had just asked who said the same thing. Get his book.

There are some good art museums in Glasgow and a 'restored' sailing ship that we really enjoyed touring. But I agree that it can easily be done as a day trip from Edinburgh. Personally, Inverness in my favorite Scottish city. With 4 days (and assume it is a first time trip), I'd stay in Edinburgh and do Glasgow (and possibly Inverness) as day trips by train. The Whisky Experience in Edinburgh is fun and gives a very good history of whisky making as well as a free 'wee dram' at the end of the tour. If you want a suggesstion on which single malt to buy... well my favorite is Belvinnie 12 year double wood and hubby's is Dahalwhinnie 12 or 18 year.

In Glasgow look for the new museum of transport, fascinating collection, beautiful building. If you love history, think about visiting Stirling and it's castle. In Edinburgh I really enjoy The Georgian House. Look for Sandy's Bells for session music in Edinburgh. Pam

With some Edinburgh NTS sites having been mentioned (eg Georgian House), these are the ones I have visited when in Glasgow: Pollok House David Livingstone Centre
Tenement House I would also recommend House of the Binns near Linlithgow.

Edinburgh Favorite Picks 1) Edinburgh Castle - must see due to significance to city. 2) St. Giles - easy walk from Castle, can walk through on own in 30 - 45 minutes - historically significant. No fee - but donation appreciated. 3) National Scotland Museum - good for rainy day 4) National Art Gallery - nice size, free admission, but donation appreciated - 3 hours. 5) Portrait Gallery - skip modern exhibits and go right to portraits of royals. Explains history of Scotland from 1500's onward. (i.e. Mary Queen of Scots, Jacobites) (2 hours) 6)Britannia
7) Royal Mile Pubs - Deacon Brodie's Tavern and Mitre Bar. (Both owned by same company - same menu - same prices) If Deacon Pub is packed - go to Mitre Bar near Bridge street. Good food/priced well comparatively/nice atmosphere.
