I noticed several ghost tours at various prices for ghost tours of the castle. Any recommendation? Which is the best? Thanks.
Jim, Are you sure that they are ghost tours of Edinburgh Castle? I've been on Ghost Tours in the city, I'm pretty sure it was one of the Mercat Tours and I enjoyed it., but the Castle is an Historic Scotland site and their tours are free with admission. The castle closes at 6 PM in the summer and earlier in the winter so not very spooky. It's a great place to visit though. I go every time I visit Edinburgh. Here's the URL to the castle. http://www.edinburghcastle.gov.uk/index.htm Pam
I echo Pamela's question: Are you sure the ghost tour was inside the castle walls? I don't recall seeing any ghost tours in Edinburgh Castle and I'm the type to take notice of something like that. (However, I haven't yetdone any ghost tours in Scotland, so I can't recommend any.) We spent five hours exploring Edinburgh Castle just covering the cool history and great views of the city without any ghosts involved. That was twice as much time as we expected. Overall, during the three days / three nights we spent in the city, we managed to see about 2/3 of what we had hoped. There is just THAT much to see and do there. So unless you have lots of time on itinerary, or a ghost tour is very, very important to you, I wouldn't attempt to book one early. Maybe just see what's there when you arrive and jump on the first one that looks fun if you have a free evening.
I don't know about a ghost tour of the castle but you can certainly find ghostly walks being organized for the surrounding neighborhoods. But what you want to do is check on Greyfriars Cemetery. There be ghosts there.
My mistake. There are no ghost tours at the castle. Thanks for the replies.
Be sure to take the tour of Mary King's Close, just down the hill from the castle. Look it up on Google. There is supposed to be a ghost of a child down there, we thought it was the best tour we took in Edinburgh. And yes to Greyfriar's Cemetery again just near the castle.
We also enjoyed our tour of Mary King's Close. It was enough spooky, without being too cheesy. Edinburgh is great. Read the 44 Scotland Street series by A. McCall Smith to get you in the right mood (nothing spooky or ghostly in these books, but just a take on modern day Edinburgh).
