How hard is it to get out to Edinburgh airport from central Edinburgh? It looks like the train runs right from Waverley station to the airport; does anyone know how much that might cost?
There is no rail link to/from the airport. You have to use either bus or taxi. More details can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/34unq9
They keeping talking about a rail-link, but it will be years before they ever decide what to do, let alone start doing it. The tram though, will go to the airport.
For now, the easiest and best option is the bus. For £5 return, you can take aiporter bus which leaves every ten minutes and makes limited stops so it's about 25 minutes to city centre. The number 35 also makes the trip for £1.10 each way (fares go up this week from £1), but has a lot more stops so is much slower.
You should budget a bit of extra time in because there are major roadworks at one end of Princes Street, which means the buses have significant diversions.

Thanks for the replies! They were very helpful.
Kate, my trip's not until September; do you know if the road work is supposed to be finished by then, or is it like here where any road project MUST (it seems) drag on for a minimum of six months after it was to be finished?
we took a cab. it was a good price and cabs are really helpful and clean. you could take the bus, but to be honest, it wasn't that expensive and took a lot of stress out of the day. :)
We have used the bus service and found it inexpensive and very convient.
