In September my husband and I need to get from York, England to Paris. We'd like to know the most economical way to do that and the most direct way - realizing, of course, that they probably will not be the same.
Hello Raggi. A travel route, in the shortest amount of travel time, and the least complicated, is : ride in an express train from York to London. And ride in a Eurostar train from St. Pancras station in London to Paris. The train goes through the British Channel tunnel. To get the lowest price for the Eurostar train ride to Paris, buy the tickets, in advance (two weeks, or earlier), at the internet website of Eurostar.
Raggi, Travelling to London and taking the EuroStar to Paris is probably the easiest option. I travelled that route last year from Edinburgh, and it was easy but a long travel day. If you choose that option, be sure to book your EuroStar ticket early. Note that you MUST check-in at least 30-minutes prior to departure. You may find it helpful to have a look at This Website. While it likely wouldn't save any time, another option would be to take the train to Manchester Airport (~2H:20M), and use a direct budget flight to Paris / CDG. Have a look at This Airline for one example. There are also flights available from Leeds, however they require at least one change (Amsterdam), so the overall travel time would probably be longer. I also checked Durham Tees Airport as it's about the closest one to York (about 30 minutes by train to Darlington, and then transfer to airport). However, there didn't seem to be any flights from there that would work. Happy travels!
You can take a direct train from York to Manchester Airport in 1hr45min. The standard 2nd class fare is £14. Booked in advance at www.eastcoast.co.uk, you can get a discount fare as low as £9.00. Booked well in advance, you can get a ticket for less than £50.00 on a Flybe flight from Manchester to CDG. A ticket from CDG to anywhere in central Paris using the RER and metro costs €9.25. If you take the train from York to London, you can get a discount fare as low as £13.00 by booking in advance on the East Coast site. The standard 2nd class fare is around £50.00. Booked well in advance (up to 180 days allowed) at www.eurostar.com, you can get a discount fare as low as €42.50 for London-Paris. Trains from York to London arrive at King's Cross. The Eurostar departs from St Pancras International. It's a very short walk between the stations.
Adding to my previous post. By the time you factor in the extra time you would have to allow to go through security and check in at the Manchester airport and the time it takes to get from CDG to Paris, taking the train all the way will be just as fast - and certainly a lot more comfortable and relaxing. However, be sure to allow for the 30-minute mandatory check-in deadline for the Eurostar. You will go through security and passport control at St Pancras International, but when you get off the train in Paris you can simply go right out the door.
