Hello Bill, I don't have any experience with it but the National UK Railway train schedule listed about 2 an hour from Gatwick Airport to Bath Spa for a random day in April (as far out as you can book right now) I chose. Check your options some changed once others twice and took a little longer. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Train tickets bought in advance are much cheaper but are usually restricted to that particular train so you have to allow time to get through customs and get to the train platform. It looks like the Gatwick train station is adjacent to airport so that should be easy. Have a great trip,

Bill,
My wife and I did this on our honeymoon in 2009. The train connection right from the airport was easy to get to. We were traveling on rail passes at the time and there was a short queue at the ticket booths to get our passes validated for the first time. The woman at the booth was very helpful in giving us two possible options for connecting to Bath Spa. As I recall, we had to make one transfer, I think at Reading. For reasons I don't recall we did have a bit of trouble locating the proper connection at Reading, but the staff of British rail services are uniformly excellent and someone got us on a different train that departed a few minutes earlier than our planned route. The trip itself was a bit scenic. Fields, low stone walls, and a few sheep somewhere along the way. It was about 2+ hours for the whole trip and my one strong memory of it was how exhausting the whole thing was. We were both experienced train travelers in Britain and the rest of Europe, but the transatlantic travel, trip to Reading, and connection to Bath had us wiped out. We splurged for a taxi when we arrived in Bath although our B&B wasn't far. I certainly recommend that route as fine start to a trip, but at least in our experience, getting to Bath and checking in was enough to call it a day. We partook of the spa late afternoon and enjoyed a deep, restful sleep afterward which really helped us adjust to UK time wonderfully.

Bill, Hopefully Nigel or one of the other U.K. posters will spot this post, as I'm sure they'll have some great tips. I haven't done any detailed checking, but one option that comes to mind would be to travel directly from Gatwick to Bath Spa. Check the www.nationalexpress.com for details. The trip from Gatwick is about 4.5 hours, and fares are currently listed at about £25 PP. When you arrive at Bath Spa, I'd recommend taking a Taxi to your Hotel. You'll be tired and hauling luggage, so I'm sure you'll want the easiest method. Happy travels!
