getting a mobile phone in Britain

My daughter and I will be in Britain next month and can't our verizon phones there. I have a Mobal that I purchased a few years ago, but would like to purchase/rent a mobile for my daughter to use there. We have e-mail access on my Nook, and will only use the phones to connect with one another (hi! I'm by the river, where are you?) types of things, perhaps contacting hotels if we are going to be late. We will only use for over-seas if there is an emergency-lost credit card etc. I have a few hours at Heathrow waiting for my group to arrive-then we go directly to Norwich. Should I get one at Heathrow? Wait for Norwich? I wonder where to buy and what a reasonable cost would be. Any suggestions, please?

Diane, You may be able to buy an inexpensive PAYG phone when you arrive at Heathrow, but I'm not sure which side of security the Cell shops are located in? Which terminal are you arriving at? When I passed through Heathrow last year, I noticed vending machines that dispensed SIM cards, and they may also dispense phones (but I didn't check that closely). If you aren't able to buy a phone at Heathrow, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a Cell shop in Norwich. Happy travels!

Diane, I think you can get a prepaid phone for 20 or 30 pounds, but I haven't checked recently. Do an internet search for carphone warehouse and you can see some typical prices.

Diane, Go to any Carphone Warehouse (they are all over the UK - odds are there is one in Norwich). You can definitely get a cheap phone with prepaid service.

I'm coming into Terminal 1 and will be leaving by coach, so I will leave the secure area. I'll look around there a little as I have several hours but will also check prices on the internet as suggested. Thanks

If you are already with Verizon, this may help.....Verizon has a great Global Travel Program that will loan you a different phone with the appropriate global chip for one month. It costs about $20 plus a small fee for texts (maybe?), and you can choose between a regular phone or a smart phone. I just activated the phone a day or two before my overseas trip, and was able to keep my same phone number. The customer service was extremely helpful and did a great job explaining everything to me.
