I know my great grandfather came from Lismore in County Cork. Does anyone know how one would go about finding out anymore before visit there. I know his name and approximate birthdate.
There are a number of good books on searching your Irish ancestry, some of which are kept in the reference sections of local libraries or are sold by all the major bookstores. Also the LDS Church (the Mormons) sponsors Family History Centers all over the country --and the world. You can google them and find a nearby location. I've used my local family history center and received some good advice. Best wishes for a successful search!
In response to the advice about the LDS Geneology Centers- Their research is only as good as the people who refer it to them, as the lion's share of their info is just that. I ran into huge discrepencies doing simple research on my grandmother who I KNEW was born in TN. They had her as being born in Oregon. Where her family lived for a short period of time LONG after she and her 5 siblings were born in TN. LDS listed ALL of them as having been born in Oregon. Because someone who only knew then from Oregon supplied LDS with that disinformation. There are many more reliable sources than LDS. And had I NOT happened upon that error/inconsistency I'd have sworn by their research simply because word of mouth testifies that they are "the BEST". Perhaps NOT.
Carol,
I would start at Ancestry.com. Depending on when your gr. grandfather was born, you may also find information at the National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Here are a couple of sites I use in my own research they have sections dealing with genealogy research in Ireland.
