Hi! I plan on traveling from Galway to Dingle in early September. Any suggestions on the best way to get there? I looked into taking Irish Rail from Galway to Limmerik and then the Bus from Limmerik to Tralee. It looks like round trip is about 5 hours. Any thoughts on how long it would take to drive this? Would anyone recommend it? We don't plan on stopping to see any sights in between. Also - I read about a car ferry from Galway to Tralee. Is it possible for me to just walk on as a passenger without a car? Thanks!
Thanks for the info Nancy! I was reading elsewhere that the drive from Galway to Dingle can be a little intense with winding roads, etc. Do you know anything about this? Are there companies I could hire to drive me from Galway to Dingle? I was thinking the most economical and fastest route would be to drive. But I am the one who will be driving so I just want to know what I am getting myself into ahead of time.
ViaMichelin.com shows the drive from Galway to Dingle to be about 4 hours, taking the route through Limerick (not Limmerik). I'm confused about your statement "it looks like round trip is about 5 hours". Just going one way will take that and more by rail and then bus (you would also have to take a bus from Tralee to Dingle). Are you planning this as a round trip? There is no ferry from Galway to Tralee - it is an overland route. You might be thinking of the ferry from Tarbert to Killimer, across the Shannon River, which is the other route to Dingle from Galway. It is a car ferry. However, to get there you would need a car, so whether or not you could walk on doesn't matter.
Most of the roads in the west are like that, but on the other hand, there is little traffic. The quickest, most efficient way to get there would be to drive. I don't have any idea about companies that might drive you. I always drive myself - even when I'm traveling alone. It's a shame, though, that you will drive past the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher and you don't plan to stop for anything.
So I think you have convinced me to stop and visit The Burren and Cliff's of Moher on the way to Dingle. My husband was wanting to stop anyways! Do you have any recommendations on car rental companies? The most economical hopefully? Also. I would pick up the car in Galway but would like to drop off in Tralee or Killarney if possible. We will be taking a train back to Dublin from Dingle. Looking around so far, I don't see any car companies that allow drop off in Tralee. Thoughts?
Kerry airport at Farranfore is about equal distance from Tralee or Killarney (in between them). It's about a 20 minute drive from either. That will probably be the closest car rental for your dropoff. The best company is whichever one gives you the best deal. On three of my four trips, that was Irish Car Rentals (which does have an office at the Kerry airport). Go with whatever company operates out of Kerry and also gives you the best price - it changes all the time.
