Galway to Ashford

We will be staying in Galway for 2 nights, then driving to Ashford Castle for a one-night stay. We don't need to check in to the castle until 2pm or after. Is there any part of Connemara we can fit in between this time?

Go the long way (west side of the lakes) through the Maam Valley for a really scenic drive. It makes the trip an hour and a half instead of an hour. Along the way you could even stop at Oughterard and take a boat tour of Lough Corrib for a couple of hours.
