Galway..Salthill..favorite w/ view? thoughts, suggestions, recommendations?

Hi..
I was going to stay city center Galway but the rooms are so much nicer for the same price a little further out in Salthill and if we can take a bus (Rick says 3/hr) it might be a better choice for 4 nights rather than cramped up in town where most rooms are pretty small for 2 people for 4 nights. The views of the bay look fantastic and that the prom would be fun to jog in the AM. Any thoughts, suggestions, and especially any recommendations (and why)? Thanks.

I didn't stay in Salthill, but I usually find a central location is important for us when we travel. The extra time and money spent on a bus into the city generally isn't worth it for us.

We actually stayed at the Sleepzone hostel in Galway and were very impressed with it. We were in a room in a house down the street - we were in a double with a private bath on the main floor, where there was also a kitchen and living room, there were I think 2 single rooms upstairs that shared a washroom. There was only one person in one room upstairs, and we only saw him pass through once, so it was like we had a whole house to ourselves.

To each his own - if you suspect Salthill is what is best for you, go for it. Have a good time!

Like Jay, we like to stay in a central location when we travel. There are many B&Bs in Galway with sufficient room for 2 people. You won't actually be spending much time in the room anyway. Haven't been in Salthill so can't give any advice there.

Thanks...I generally stay in a central place too but this time have decided on Salthill and made reservations for a place that overlooks Galway bay, has a bus stop just outside the door (3 per hour) and can actually be walked in about 20 minutes if it is not raining. We are taking a couple day tours that will pick us up at the door and looks like there may be a nice bay boat ride..we will see. We changed plans and have 5 nights now. We are both walkers so a 20 minute walk is fine and we get an awful lot more for the price by staying a little out of town. There are pubs close by and if we do stay in Galway proper one night, we can take a cab. Doubt if the cost could be much so we can splurge a night. I would want to walk the boardwalk/prom of Salthill along the bay anyway so I think for our purposes it (hopefully) will be a good choice to diverge from my usual more centrally located accomodations. I'll give an honest report when we get home! Thanks again everyone.

I stayed for 2 nights in May at the Rossa B&B. It's just off Eyre Square in Galway city center. The rooms are very small, but clean. I am a very light sleeper but they have double paned windows and it was very quiet at night.

Valerie, the proprietor, was a lovely host. She even drove us to dinner one night so we wouldn't have to take a cab!

We paid 70 euros total per night for the two of us.

I'm sure Salthill is very nice, and you'll certainly get a nicer view staying there than in the city. But you lose the convenience of being able to stroll home through the city after dinner. You just need to decide what are the priorities for you.

Enjoy your trip!
